The Center for Mathematics and Science Education (CMSE) is hosting a series of professional development sessions from September 2026 through February 2027 focused on developing mathematical concepts across grade levels.

These sessions are designed to explore the mathematics standards from the lens of concept development. Teachers will gain a deeper understanding of how the content they teach fits within the broader spectrum of student learning, explore how instructional strategies support mathematical flexibility and fluency, and engage in across-grade discussions to better support students’ overall learning. Teachers attending any of these sessions will receive a free copy of the Mathematical Concept Progression Guide.

Mathematics Concept Progression Series

  • Addition and Subtraction – September 25, 2026, Oxford, MS
    (Deadline to register is September 17)
    Computational skills are foundational to students’ mathematical learning. During this session, participants will investigate the development of addition and subtraction concepts in the early grades and examine how those foundational understandings extend to adding and subtracting fractions, integers, and polynomials. Participants will explore strategies for helping students recognize connections among these operations to build fluency, flexibility, and number sense.
  • Multiplication and Division – October 23, 2026, Oxford, MS
    This session will explore how students develop understanding of multiplication and division concepts from the early grades through Algebra I. Participants will examine how ideas such as equal groups, arrays, proportional reasoning, and inverse relationships build across grade levels and connect to later algebraic thinking. Teachers will leave with a deeper understanding of the learning progression and strategies for supporting students in making meaningful mathematical connections.
  • Measurement and Data – December 3, 2026, Pearl, MS
    Collecting accurate measurements and applying those values to real-world contexts is an essential skill for all students. These values also contribute to the breadth of data that we encounter in a variety of situations. During this session, participants will explore how students’ engagement with measurement and data collection processes becomes more sophisticated over time. Teachers will understand the importance of data literacy and how early elementary experiences prepare students to interpret data sets in the upper grades.
  • Number Lines – January 28, 2027, Pearl, MS
    From understanding numbers and operations in the elementary grades to using them for data representations in middle and high school, number lines are a versatile mathematical tool. This session will guide teachers through understanding the important structure of number lines, effective use as a model for computation, and as a tool for representing data.
  • Word Problems – February 18, 2027, Pearl, MS
    Beginning in kindergarten, students are expected to distinguish between numbers and quantities and then apply their understanding of quantities to contextual situations. This process begins by applying mathematical concepts to make sense of word problems and then moves to considering real world problems. Students then are expected to “Model with Mathematics.” This trajectory of learning is clear and purposeful in our standards. This session will engage educators in exploring this intentional progression of mathematics learning and strategies to support students in solving contextual problems.
