Balancing the Equation: Monthly PLC ‘Math Talks’ for math instructors is Feb. 15

The Mississippi Department of Education invites you to participate in the second installment of the monthly PLC “math talks” from 3:30 -4:30 p.m. Feb. 15, hosted by the K-12 Mathematics Content Director Tommisha Johnson in collaboration with the Mathematics Professional Development Coordinators, Amy Pinkerton (K-6) and Kandra Wilkins (7-12).

Balancing the Equation: Leveling the Playing Field for Mississippi Math Instructors is a Virtual PLC series for math teachers, interventionists, coaches and administrators across the state of Mississippi. In session one, the guest speaker, Dr. Julie James, introduced the foundations of the MS CCRS, also known as the Instructional Shifts of Mathematics.

In session two, Amy Pinkerton, the Math K-6 Professional Development Coordinator (PDC), will provide a deeper look into the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract approach to mathematics instruction. She will demonstrate how this approach builds conceptual understanding, procedural fluency and other key components identified within the Instructional Shifts of Mathematics. Be prepared to engage in content pertaining to your specific grade band.
