Wanted: Exemplary K-6 Teachers

Do you teach in a K-6 classroom?  Have you ever been told that you are a great teacher? Has your passion for teaching and learning impacted the professional development environment of your school or the community?

If you answered “YES” to each question above, the MDE is looking for you!

We would like to encourage teachers in grades K-6 to consider applying for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST).  The PAEMST award is the highest honor bestowed by the United States government for exemplary K-12 science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), and/or computer science teaching.

Due to COVID-19 pandemic, the application deadline for the 2019-2020 school year has been extended to October 26, 2020.  Now is the time for those K-6 teachers that have been nominated already to complete their application portfolio.   And, for newly interested K-6 teachers to begin the application process and complete theirs.

Once all complete applications and portfolios are submitted by the October deadline, they are forwarded to the MS State Selection Committee (SSC) for review.   The SSC is an independent, anonymous group of highly trained educators charged with selecting up to 3 MS teachers in Math and up to 3 MS teachers in Science to be considered at the national level.  Teachers that are selected as national level winners participate in several national events and receive an $10,000 award for their personal use.

For more information about the PAEMST program and to complete the application process,  please visit www.paemst.org.

All applications and completed portfolios MUST be submitted through the PAEMST portal by October 26 for consideration.

If you have any questions for the MDE, please contact the MDE PAEMST State Coordinators, Dr. Kevin Gaylor (kgaylor@mdek12.org) or Tommisha Johnson (tjohnson@mdek12.org).

You have what it takes, Mississippi!

*Please Note:  The nomination and application cycle for grade 7-12 teachers will begin later this Fall*
