The Vicksburg Warren School District has hosted hundreds of individuals in past years on student-led tours of our innovative schools and programs. This year because of social distancing restrictions, we are unable to have in-person visitors, so we have created an exciting virtual tour series. Each tour will feature

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2020

Career and Technical Education Center
Guest Speaker: Dr. Stephen Vacik, President, Hinds Community College

 The number of students participating in Career and Technical Education has grown from under 200 students to over 600 in the last two years. Strong partnerships with Hinds Community College, Alcorn State University and Mississippi State University have made it possible to offer college credit to students at no cost to them or their parents. Every CTE course offers college credit and last year, students in the VWSD earned 7,053 college credits, giving them a head-start on their career after graduation.

Bowmar Elementary is a K-6 elementary school. Bowmar, along with Bovina Elementary school, was named the state’s first Lighthouse School in the State of Mississippi by Franklin Covey. There are five designated Lighthouse Schools in the state, all of which are part of the VWSD. The Leader In Me initiative, based on Stephen R. Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, is a school-wide transformative initiative that emphasizes setting goals, positive teamwork and self discipline and builds leadership skills.

This program was originally funded through a partnership with the local Chamber of Commerce and has now expanded district wide.

High school education in the Vicksburg Warren School District is transforming through Academies. The Vicksburg Warren College & Career Academies allow students to choose a thematic course of study and learn in a relevant, hands-on environment with readistrict is moving to provide students more of the advanced skills they need to be successful, productive citizens in college, career, and life.

Our students learn math, science, English, and social studies in the context of their Academy topic area. The following academies have been formed in the district.

  • ACME – Architecture, Construction, Mechatronics & Engineering
  • CAB – Communications, Arts & Business
  • HHS – Health & Human Services

Dana Road Elementary School

 Dana Road Elementary School serves Pre-K through second grade students. It began implementation of Leader in Me (LiM) four years ago and is considering review for Lighthouse Status this year. This is a great place to discover how LIM can be implemented even with the youngest students.

Academy of Innovation

The Academy of Innovation is a junior high STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) academy where students participate in project-based learning. It is an accelerated program of study for VWSD grades 7 and 8 students.

Academy of Innovation provides learning opportunities for those students that exhibit exceptional abilities in academics. Students that exhibit academically intelligent characteristics and are selected will have the opportunity to participate in learning processes that incorporate thinking, exploration, and projects while integrating the frameworks of educational standards. The Academy of Innovation is in year four of implementation of Leader In Me and was granted Lighthouse Status in the spring of 2019. They will move into a brand new building in the spring of 2021.
