The Center for Mathematics and Science Education at the University of Mississippi is offering a two-day Understanding Fractions professional development institute for Grades 3-6 teachers. This institute will engage teachers in exploring strategies and tools to introduce representations of fractions, including manipulatives, number lines, and visual diagrams. Strategies for building conceptual understanding of fraction equivalence will be explored as well as strategies for teaching operations with fractions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). Participants will discuss how these strategies build upon students’ prior experiences with operations with whole numbers.
