Schools must send MDE results of required natural gas pipeline testing

House Bill 1186 of the 2025 Mississippi Legislature Session, signed by Gov. Tate Reeves on March 12, 2025, requires all public elementary and secondary schools, charter schools, and private schools to conduct annual testing of all natural gas lines in each school facility each year prior to the start of each academic year, beginning with the 2026-2027 school year.

In addition to reporting the results to the local school’s gas provider, HB1186 further requires public elementary and secondary schools along with charter schools to report the annual tests to the Mississippi Department of Education. Please email the results of the tests to gastest@mdek12.org using the provided form MS School Facilities – Gas Pipe Test Results Form. In addition, in the event of natural gas line leakages before each annual inspection, please report the leak to gastest@mdek12.org as well.

To see the rules and regulations for natural gas pipeline testing as prescribed by the Public Service Commission, review Title 39 Part V.
