Required mental health training available for school employees, personnel; Deadline is February 28

Required refresher training on mental health and suicide prevention is now available for all school employees and personnel. After training is complete, mental health assurance forms must be submitted by Feb. 28.

The Mississippi School Safety Act of 2019 states (9) as a component of the comprehensive local school district safety plan required under subsection (2) of this section, beginning in the 2019-2020 school year, the State Department of Education shall require local school districts to conduct, every two (2) years, refresher training on mental health and suicide prevention for all school employees and personnel, including all cafeteria workers, custodians, teachers, and administrators.

The Mississippi Department of Mental Health shall be responsible for the development and/or selection of the content of the training, which training shall be provided at no cost to school employees.  School districts shall report completion of the training to the State Department of Education. Districts can select from the list of recommended courses on pages 3-5 in the following document to meet this requirement – Improving the Mental Health of Mississippi’s Children and Youth.

Once all school employees have been trained, the District Training Assurance form Mental Health Assurance Form should be completed and uploaded to SharePoint. Upload the Mental Health Training Assurance form in SharePoint titled, Mental Health Training- Year (i.e. Mental Health Training, 2019-2022).

To ensure a successful upload, it is recommended that districts allow the individual who uploaded the Suicide Prevention training form to SharePoint and already has login access to upload the Mental Health Training Assurance Form.

The deadline for submission for the 2019 -2020 and 2020-2021 school year is February 28, 2022.
