The Mississippi Department of Education’s Office of Elementary Education and Reading, Division of Literacy, announces an opportunity for district administrators, principals, lead teachers, and instructional coaches (K-5) to attend a one-day, in-person professional development training titled Regional Literacy Training: Digging Deeper Into the Science. The dates and locations are Oct. 28 in Hattiesburg, Nov. 4 in Jackson and Nov. 13 in Oxford.
This professional development will include three concurrent sessions that explore the relationship between the science of reading, oral language development, and building knowledge. Each session will be engaging and applicable to all areas of literacy.
Decoding the Science of Reading: This session will delve into the brain science behind the science of reading. Participants will gain an understanding of orthographic mapping, deepen their knowledge of the neural underpinnings and cognitive processes of reading, and discuss implications for instruction.
Oral Language in Literacy Development: Explore the connection between oral language and complex texts. Oral language skills provide the foundation for word reading and comprehension. Complex text and read alouds promote the development of oral language.
What’s Knowledge Got to Do With It? During this session, participants will debunk the comprehension myth by revealing the comprehension truth. Participants will gain understanding of the importance of building background knowledge and its connection to becoming a skilled reader.
Concurrent sessions have a start time of 8 a.m.
