Public Comments: Board Policy (Youth Detention Center Educational Provisions)

Greetings Superintendents, Curriculum Coordinators, Special Education Directors, Federal Programs Directors, and Principals:

On June 21, 2018, the State Board of Education (SBE) granted approval to begin the Administrative Procedures Act (APA) process to revise the State Board Policy, Chapter 30, Rule 30.6: Youth Detention Center Educational Provisions.

The proposed revisions to Rule 30.6 will clarify the funding process utilized for Juvenile Detention Center (JDC) education programs and will outline the fiscal responsibilities of the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE), sponsoring school districts, and non-sponsoring school districts.

The MDE will continue to review and approve sponsoring school districts’ projected and final JDC education program budgets. As in the current fiscal year, any excess costs for educational services will be shared by all school districts in the state utilizing the formula established by the MDE.

The MDE invites you to review the proposed revisions and provide feedback through the APA process.
