NEW English Learner Guidelines: Regulations, Funding, and Instructional Supports

Greetings Superintendents, Principals, Federal Programs Directors, Curriculum Directors, Special Education Directors, and School Counselors,

The Mississippi Department of Education is pleased to share our new  English Learner Guidelines: Regulations, Funding Guidance and Instructional Supports publication with educators across our state.

This document is designed with a variety of educators in mind. Part One, entitled “English Learner Guidelines,” and Part Two, “Federal Education Grants that Can Support English Learner Students,” are likely of particular interest to Federal Programs Directors, English Learner Coordinators, and building level administrators.

Part Three, “Instructional Resources to Support Teachers of English Learners,” and Part Four, “Administrator Supports for Working with English Learners,” take a practical approach and are expected to be especially helpful to principals, general education and English learner teachers and tutors, along with curriculum coordinators, academic coaches and others involved in day-to-day instruction of English learners.

A Dear Colleague letter from the U.S. Department of Education outlining the Civil Rights of English Learners is also included and should be reviewed by all individuals who support English learners.

A variety of trainings will be provided on this document in the coming weeks. Please look for announcements about regional trainings for Federal Programs Directors and EL coordinators to be held in mid-June, followed by trainings specifically for teachers and administrators.  Also, look for related professional development at several of our summer conference events.

Our hope is that this document will serve as a valuable resource for Mississippi educators, as we continue to work together to ensure that all of Mississippi’s English learners receive the education they both need and deserve.
