New Canvas Courses: Strong ELA and Math Instruction

The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE), Office of School Improvement is offering virtual professional learning from TNTP based on their research on The Opportunity Myth. The MDE Canvas Course titled “Strong ELA and Math Instruction” will allow educators to examine and ensure strong classroom instruction by:

  • Building understanding of student experiences
  • Providing a general understanding of strong K-12 literacy and mathematics instruction
  • Using key tools to determine grade-level appropriateness of texts, tasks, and instructional approaches
  • Practice using the Instructional Walkthrough Tool to evaluate literacy and mathematics instruction

The 4-part TNTP training began March 2020. Due to the COVID-19, the remaining sessions have been converted to virtual modules.   Powerpoint presentations and resources from the two previously conducted sessions can be requested from the Office of School Improvement.

The course will be offered June 1-25, 2021.  Participants can earn 0.5 CEUs for the completion of the math and ELA workbooks and assessments.

Monitoring Interventions

The Mississippi Department of Education, Office of School Improvement is pleased to offer an online learning opportunity to support districts and schools examine protocols and processes utilized to determine effectiveness of implementation and monitoring of interventions June 1-22, 2021.  Participants can earn 0.7 CEUs or 5 SEMIs upon completion of the course.

In this Canvas course, schools will be able to participate and explore the process of implementing and monitoring interventions.

The modules in the course will cover:

  • Understanding the role of implementation planning and monitoring for successful school interventions
  • Building a personalized implementation plan that fosters buy-in and support
  • Creating a monitoring plan that includes SMART goals and data collection methods
  • Making informed, data-driven decisions about intervention or program changes
