MSMS to Offer Virtual Math Series and Tournament for Grades 1-12

In an effort to reduce in-person events due to COVID-19 but still give students the opportunity to participate in engaging, educational activities, The Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science will host a 4-week Zoom series in addition to a virtual math tournament beginning Feb. 3.

Math All-Stars

This year, MSMS students and faculty are hosting the free, math-themed Zoom series, Math All-Stars, at 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 3, 10, 17 and 24. First-9th graders are eligible to attend one of the following break-out rooms every week:

  • Room 1: Counting within 1,000; Addition and Subtraction within 100 (Target grades 1-3)
  • Room 2: Operations with Whole Numbers within 1,000 (Target grades 3-5)
  • Room 3: Operations with Fractions, Decimals, and Integers (Target grades 5-7)
  • Room 4: Expressions and Equations (Target grades 7-9)

To participate, students need a device (computer, iPad, smart phone, etc.), reliable internet access, and access to a printer. After signing up, printable worksheets and answer keys will be sent to every participant. Students can register individually, or teachers can register their entire class for this enrichment experience. Mu Alpha Theta Virtual Math Tournament

The MSMS Chapter of Mu Alpha is hosting its first virtual math tournament in lieu of the annual Math Tournament at the Trotter Convention Center from Feb. 22-26.

“The MSMS Math Tournament is an annual event our students look forward to hosting and begin planning as early as September,” Mathematics faculty Shae Koenigsberger said. “This is a unique school year for everyone, but we felt it was important to offer the tournament. We brainstormed ideas and came up with a plan to provide a fun-filled, problem solving tournament in the safest possible way. We hope you can join in on the fun!”

During the first part of the tournament, students will compete individually in one of the following levels: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Trig/Pre-Calculus, Calculus. Participants are required to use the online platform Arete Labs in order to complete the test, which consists of ten multiple choice questions and ten numerical response questions. Registration costs $7 per student. Participants also have the option to compete as a team during the Mini-Interschool Round at no additional cost.

Team sponsors are welcome to register any interested 8th-12th grade students to compete in this virtual competition. Sponsors are responsible for scheduling each individual test for their students from Feb. 22-26. To learn more, visit www.themsms.org/programs-camps/mu-alpha-theta-tournament.
