For courses to be approved for use as online classes, local school districts must apply to the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) for approval to ensure the vendor/provider’s content, curriculum, and assessments are aligned to Mississippi’s course standards and the vendor/provider’s teachers are certified Mississippi teachers. This review process is not required for courses delivered through a face-to-face model or a blended/hybrid model of face-to-face and online. For more information on course types, please see Rule 56.1.
Due to COVID-19 pandemic, the Mississippi Department of Education is opening an additional Mississippi Online Course Approval (MOCA) review during the summer 2020. This MOCA review will be conducted on an abbreviated timeline in order to make the courses available for the 2020-2021 school year. The Summer 2020 Special Mississippi Online Course Approval Guidelines and Application can be accessed from MDE’s (MOCA) website.
Please note that this review is only required for courses that will be delivered in a full online format without face-to-face instruction.
The deadline for distance or online courses to be approved for the 2020-2021 school year is June 30, 2020.
