Be Your Own Boss

Description: The Mississippi Council on Economic Education and Mississippi Secretary of State are coming together again this summer to provide an educator workshop with the following objectives:

  • Research opportunities in Mississippi to start a business.
  • Explore resources created by the Mississippi Secretary of State to be used when starting a business (Y’all Business and Mississippi Boss).
  • Learn to teach lesson plans in any subject that encourages students to start their own business (i.e. car mechanic, culinary art, agriculture, arts, business)

For: Any middle or high school teacher in Mississippi teaching one of the following:

  • Business
  • Career Discovery
  • CCR
  • CTE
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Work Based Learning

Where: University of Southern Mississippi- Gulf Park Campus (Long Beach, MS)

Requirements:  

  • Attendance at the full workshop

  Fundamentals of Environmental Economics

Description:  The one-day Fundamentals of Environmental Economics workshop is designed to familiarize middle and high school teachers with a non-biased approach that introduces the basics of environmental economics and provides effective simulations to introduce the concepts into the classroom.

The program will include classroom-tested activities, as well as a variety of interactive lectures and case studies focusing on the following:

  • Overview of environmental economics concepts
  • Tragedy of the Commons
  • Water use policies
  • Climate change policies
  • Priorities for global spending simulation
  • Land use case study

Master Teacher of College and Career Readiness 2.0 (ONLINE)

Description: In addition to improving teaching skills, the Master Teacher of College and Career Readiness (MTCCR) improves a teacher’s ability and practice of being a good critical thinker. MTCCRs will have more ability and confidence to empower their students’ critical thinking capacity to make better choices as they prepare to leave high school and enter the workforce, military or post-secondary education. Successful MTCCRs will understand why personal finance education is valuable and learn how to present the content in an engaging manner; learn how to use materials created by Get2College to mentor students in the process of planning for and applying for college; have the ability to mentor students in making decisions on next steps after high school; articulate answers to the essential questions of what is after high school and why different choices make sense for different students; recognize good personal finance informational text; improve in structuring learning experiences, and improve on professional evaluations. The MTCCR was developed to be an example that teachers could replicate in their classrooms to meet best practices in engaging students to integrate the economic way of thinking into their lives.

Master Teacher of Economics 2.0 (ONLINE!)

Description: Economics is really cool. There is no other subject that is more “real world.” Learn how to teach the subject in an exciting, engaging and hands-on manner through the Master Teacher in Economics (MTE) program. It is designed for high school teachers to increase their economic understanding. This improves teachers’ abilities to bring economics to their students in stand-alone economics courses or to integrate economics as a strand within social studies and business curricula.

  Master Teacher of Personal Finance 2.0 (ONLINE)

Description: The Master Teacher in Personal Finance (MTPF) program is designed to provide middle and high school teachers with the personal finance content necessary to teach a high school personal finance course or to incorporate the topic into other courses, i.e. business, math, ICT, College and Career Readiness. In addition to content instruction, teachers will learn about a variety of high-quality resources they can use to teach the content in the classroom. The content and classroom resources are aligned with National Standards for Financial Literacy produced by the national Council for Economic Education. Teachers that complete this program are required to participate with students in the MCEE Personal Finance Challenge Online. This program is offered as a collaboration between the Mississippi Council on Economic Education, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis and the Mississippi Department of Education.

Master Teacher of Career Readiness (ONLINE)

Description: The Master Teacher of Career Readiness program provides special education teachers with the resources necessary to help their students succeed in career opportunities beyond high school. The content and classroom activities are aligned with the Mississippi Alternative Academic Achievement Standards for Career Readiness. While the Master Teacher of College and Career Readiness (MTCCR) program provides recommended assignment adaptations within the College and Career Readiness course for students with accommodations who are seeking a traditional diploma, the Master Teacher of Career Readiness (MTCR) program is designed for teachers of students with significant cognitive disabilities who are seeking an alternate diploma.

For: SPED teachers that are teaching 7-12 grade self-contained special education students with significant cognitive disabilities who are seeking an alternate diploma.

Where: The MTCR is an online course (estimated 40 hours). The 40 hours can be completed at your own pace.  For example, you can finish all assignments in one week (8 hours a day for 5 days) or space it out in intervals that work for you (i.e., approximately 3 hours a day for 3 weeks).
