MCEE offers professional development workshops for teachers

Economics of the Mississippi Music Industry

DescriptionFor the first time ever, the Mississippi Council on Economic Education (MCEE) is offering a teacher workshop at the GRAMMY Museum Mississippi on the economics of music and how to properly guide students interested in music as a career.  As a general theme, “music” has broad appeal across ages, social classes, races, and other demographics. For this workshop, MCEE will leverage the appeal of music in order to both 1) help teachers teach about Mississippi’s rich musical heritage and 2) help teachers show students various ways music and economics overlap, especially as it relates to career options. We have created a series of lessons for teachers in grades 6-12 that they can use to show students various careers in music through referencing historical and modern examples. There will be four primary focus areas:

  • careers related to performing music of all kinds
  • careers related to technical work (studio engineers, instrument builders, music app developers, etc.)
  • careers related to business and logistics (tour managers, band managers, festival coordinators, producers, etc.)
  • careers that use or are related to music (music teachers, theater performers, choreographers, publicists, etc.)

For: This workshop will be most beneficial to middle and high school teachers of music, college and career readiness, and economics.  Due to the advanced instruction that takes place in the elementary gifted classroom, these teachers will also benefit from the materials presented.

  • Web-connected device (e.g., computer, tablet, smartphone)
