First-Year Teacher Survey – Elementary Teachers

Greetings Principals:

[CC Superintendents, Curriculum Coordinators, Federal Programs Directors, and Special Education Directors]

Please see the request below from Dr. Susan Lee with the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning. This survey is targeting 2017-18 first-year elementary teachers (PK-5th grade) in an effort to strengthen educator preparation programs across Mississippi.

I am writing to enlist your assistance in an important aspect of a statewide project (funded by Kellogg and the Phil Hardin Foundations) to improve teacher preparation for early literacy instruction.

“Mississippi Momentum” is a three year project that is providing professional development to the faculty members who teach early literacy courses in our 15 public and private institutions. The rationale for this project is that if we prepare teachers more effectively in the science of reading instruction at the outset of their careers – before they ever enter a classroom – we have a better chance of significantly improving K-3 performance in literacy. Furthermore, some of the time spent to re-train teachers once they begin teaching could be redirected toward working with students!

We are in Year 1 of the project and collecting important baseline data. This includes gleaning the impressions of teachers who were in their FIRST YEAR of teaching during the 2017-18 school year. In other words, these are new teachers who represent a cohort that has not yet been impacted by the work we are doing to strengthen the IHL programs (both public and private). In the following two years, we will contact you requesting additional input from subsequent cohorts who will have experienced impact from this project.

I would greatly appreciate it if you would send this link ( to all of your FIRST YEAR teachers who were in an elementary classroom (PreK-5). Their confidential responses will remain anonymous and go directly to the external evaluator and not be viewed by any of the project partners. The project partners, by the way, are the Mississippi Department of Education, the Center for Excellence in Literacy Instruction, the Barksdale Reading Institute, and the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning.

If it would be helpful, you may excerpt all of this email to explain to recipients the purpose of the survey. The survey is short and should only take 8 to 10 minutes to complete. The deadline is June 30.

Thanks in advance for your assistance in this important matter. Please don’t hesitate to call or email should you have additional questions or need further clarification. My contact information is included.

Best Regards,

Susan Lee
