EPA announces start of 2024 Clean School Bus Rebate Program

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) announces that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is now accepting applications for the 2024 Clean School Bus Rebate Program.

Under the authority of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law of 2021, the EPA is offering rebates to subsidize replacement of existing school buses with new clean or zero-emission models (i.e., have a battery-electric, compressed natural gas, or propane drivetrain), install eligible infrastructure, and other applicable costs (including workforce training). While the final total funding amount may adjust based on demand and other considerations, the EPA anticipates offering up to $965 million in total funding for the 2024 Program.

The goal of EPA’s Clean School Bus Rebate Program is to reduce emissions from diesel school buses through their early retirement. Since the start of the Clean School Bus Rebate Program, EPA has awarded over $2.7 billion dollars to 1,315 school districts nationwide for the replacement of 8,836 school buses.

Please know that the Clean School Bus Rebate Program is independent of the Mississippi Diesel School Bus Replacement Program and under the sole authority of the EPA. For more information on the Clean School Bus Rebate Program, please visit epa.gov/system/files/documents/2024-09/420f24033.pdf.
