Early Childhood Training Series

The Mississippi Department of Education, through the Office of Early Childhood, is offering a three-part series of full-day trainings through April 2019.

The first training in the series is titled Introduction to the Pre-K CLASS Tool.  The Pre-K Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) is a tool used by the MDE to evaluate the effectiveness of teacher-child interactions in pre-kindergarten classrooms as a part of school monitoring visits. This full-day training will give participants an overview of the tool. Participants will gain a beginning knowledge of effective teacher-child interactions and how the CLASS tool assesses them.

The second training in the series is titled Utilizing the Mississippi Department of Education Early Learning Guidelines for Classrooms Serving Three- and Four-Year Old Children and Early Learning Standards for Classrooms Serving Infants through Four-Year-Old ChildrenParticipants will receive orientation to the guidelines and standards documents appropriate for their classroom.  Participants will participate in assessing current “trouble spots” in classrooms, learning centers, daily schedules, and lesson plans.  Participants will use practice documents to identify when guidelines and standards have been met.

The final training in the series is titled Introduction to Read Right from the StartParticipants will receive guided support in the initial modules of the Read Right from the Start program. Participants will evaluate practices in their own program related to language development.

This three-part training series is:

  • available to teachers and assistants currently teaching in a Pre-K classroom or administrators of Pre-K classrooms.
  • available to individuals who have previously completed the Introduction to Pre-K CLASS tool training. (NOTE: it is not necessary to repeat this part of the series.)
  • intended for participants to take all three (3) sessions to gain comprehensive knowledge needed to effectively implement developmentally appropriate practices in the early childhood classroom.

CEUs will be available for purchase. SEMIs are offered at no cost.

Each course can accommodate 50 participants.  Registration will be on a first-come-first-served basis at https://gsmu.mdek12.org/public/course/browse.  Registrants will need to verify that they are registering for the correct location, as multiple offerings will appear in the GoSignMeUp course listing page.
