The Office of Federal Programs has received several inquiries regarding the enrollment of students who are evacuating as a result of Hurricane Michael. Under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, children and youth who are displaced by natural disasters meet the definition of homeless and are therefore eligible for McKinney-Vento services.
If your districts receives students who evacuated due to Hurricane Michael please:
- Enroll these students immediately as homeless, regardless of access to birth certificates, vaccination records and other documents.
- Complete the same homeless documentation that would otherwise be required for a student who is homeless. Please note that the child evacuated due to Hurricane Michael. This will assist both school districts and MDE in efforts to explain any significant increases in the homeless population.
- Use the sample document attached as you enroll hurricane evacuees and gather needed documentation.
If you have questions or need assistance, please contact Tiffany Jones, State Homeless Coordinator at email@example.com or Brendsha Roby, State Title I Director at firstname.lastname@example.org or call (601)-359-3499.
