- Updated CCSSO Resource: Restart & Recovery: High-Quality OER Curriculum and Resources
Through the work of states in CCSSO’s High-Quality Instructional Materials and Professional Development (IMPD) Network to identify and leverage high-quality instructional materials, CCSSO is sharing recommendations for high-quality materials to be used for remote learning due to COVID-19 school closures. This week we posted an update to this resource. - New article on school reopening: A new article published in JAMA on Data and Policy to Guide Opening Schools Safely to Limit the Spread of SARS-CoV-2 Infection outlines recent evidence on limited spread of COVID-19 in school settings. It recommends that “mitigation measures in schools must continue,” specifically pointing to masking, physical distancing, preventing overcrowding, increasing air ventilation and expanding COVID testing to rapidly identify and isolate asymptomatic individuals. It cautions against activities, such as some high school athletics, that have show increased risk of infection. In addition, the article discusses broader community policies, such as restricting indoor dining at restaurants, that must be in place to support school reopening and mitigate further spread of the infection.
- New Study- COVID-19 Cases and Transmission in 17 K–12 Schools: CDC released an MMWR on COVID-19 cases and transmission in 17 K–12 schools in Wood County, Wisconsin from August 31 to November 29, 2020. Among 17 rural Wisconsin schools, reported student mask-wearing was high, and the COVID-19 incidence among students and staff members was lower than in the county overall (3,453 versus 5,466 per 100,000). Among 191 cases identified in students and staff members, only seven (3.7%) cases, all among students, were linked to in-school spread. With masking requirements and student cohorting, transmission risk within schools appeared low, suggesting that schools might be able to safely open with appropriate mitigation efforts in place.
- K-12 Schools COVID-19 Mitigation: This K-12 Schools COVID-19 mitigation toolkit is designed for public health officials, K-12 administrators, school district officials, and occupational safety and health (OSH) professionals to assess hazards and implement mitigation strategies to reduce the spread of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) in schools. To protect students, teachers and staff, and the broader community, schools should consider implementing several of the recommended strategies, which will encourage behaviors that reduce the spread of COVID-19.
