Code.org Advocacy Coalition Update – August

Back to school information

Code.org has put together a list of recent curriculum updates, including support for online and socially-distanced learning (for example, using Code.org in online learning management systems). Our team has created resources for parents, teachers, school districts, and administrators to facilitate learning computer science this fall regardless of the school building’s opening status.

And, you can find more information on district plans for reopening across the nation on this map from MCH Data here.

CS Education Policy Forum 2020

Though we’re unable to gather in person for this year’s education policy forum, we’re holding a virtual conference this fall. More details to come, but this year’s forum will include the annual release of the 2020 State of Computer Science Report (you can find the 2019 report here), as well as several workshops and panel discussions. Stay tuned for your invitation, and we hope to see you there!

Federal EIR grant

The Federal Education Innovation Research (EIR) early-phase grant program will award five additional competitive points for applications that address computer science. More details on the program and grant here. The Department of Education is currently looking for EIR peer reviewers with K-12 education experience. More details and how to apply are here.

State policy updates

Many states wrapped up their legislative sessions for 2020, some delayed sessions due to COVID, and others are beginning plans for 2021. Some recent highlights from the 2020 session include:

North Carolina’s Board of Education approved the revised K-12 computer science standards.

Last month, Iowa passed legislation that requires all schools in the state to offer computer science by 2023 and directs the Department of Education as well as all districts in the state to create comprehensive plans around computer science education.

Mississippi funded $300,000 for computer science professional development for the upcoming year.

In Florida, the Department of Education announced $10 million in district allocations for teacher professional development related to certification and classroom instruction as well as for paying bonuses to qualifying teachers in 2021.

Pennsylvania allocated $20 million for computer science as part of the PASmart grants.
