The MDE asked the Office of the Governor for clarity about Executive Order 1517, which delays the start of the academic year until August 17 for students in grades 7-12 in school districts located in Bolivar, Coahoma, Forrest, George, Hinds, Panola, Sunflower and Washington counties. We were advised that the delay in the academic year applies to all types of school schedules: virtual, traditional or a hybrid schedule. Therefore, school districts in the eight counties identified in the order may not start school for students in grades 7-12 until August 17. School for pre-K through grade 6 may start before August 17, either through a virtual, traditional or hybrid schedule.
All districts are required to provide 180 days of instruction to students. Districts should consult with their local board attorney to ensure that educators fulfill their contractual days.
