Explore how lunar regolith could be used in the construction of future lunar habitats. The Build the Moon Challenge (BTMC) not only helps NASA learn to explore the moon and Mars more sustainably, but it helps construction and engineering industries learn more about sustainable construction materials. The BTMC engages students in designing their own lunar concrete using simulant lunar regolith in three steps:
- Develop – Students experiment with different Regolith Concrete Mixtures to see which works best.
- Demonstrate – Students use their lunar concrete to create various habitat infrastructures (bricks, 3D printed walls, and landing pads).
- Design – Students design a Lunar Habitat using their concrete mixture to improve its construction and mission parameters.
NASA’s Space Grant Consortia are offering support to cover the fees for a limited number of schools and educational organizations in many states (up to a $463 value per team). Middle school and high school teams are invited to participate.
