On July 21, 2022, The State Board of Education approved a temporary rule and to begin the Administrative Procedures Act process to revise Miss. Admin. Code 7-3: 97.1, State Board Policy Chapter 97, Rule 97.1, which pertains to weapons on school campuses. The current policy, which the State Board of Education adopted in 1990, conflicts with Mississippi’s 2011 enhanced carry concealed laws. This revised rule stills requires that local school districts establish policies as it relates to weapons on campus; however, it removes the conflict with state law. This policy provides school districts with the authority and discretion to determine their local policy. In reviewing their current policies, local school districts should consult with their board attorney to ensure compliance with federal and state law.
