The Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation (MFBF) offers the implementation of “Ag in the Classroom” to educators. Ag in the Classroom is a hands-on agricultural education program for kindergarten through 12th grade designed to foster a deeper understanding of agriculture, food production, and environmental sustainability among students. The program aims to promote agricultural literacy, instill a sense of responsibility towards the environment, and cultivate an appreciation for the hard work of farmers and their vital role in society.
All materials for programs are provided. Activities include:
- Dairy: A dairy cow simulation allows children to milk a cow, learn what can be made from milk, and allows schools to decide whether to make butter or ice cream.
- Classroom Workshops: Educators conduct interactive classroom workshops to teach students about the science of farming, crop cycles, animal husbandry, and sustainable farming practices.
- Gardening Projects: Schools are encouraged to create small gardens on their premises to allow students to plant, nurture, and harvest their own fruits and vegetables.
- Guest Speakers: Agricultural experts and farmers are invited to share their knowledge and experiences with students, enhancing their understanding of real-life agricultural challenges and solutions.
- Online Resources: Teachers are provided with many online resources, including lesson plans, multimedia content, and educational games, to complement classroom learning. The benefits of “Ag in the Classroom” extend beyond agricultural knowledge. By participating in the program, students develop critical thinking skills, foster a sense of teamwork, and cultivate a deeper connection to nature. Moreover, the curriculum aligns with academic standards, making it a valuable addition to your school’s educational offerings.
Connecting children to the roots of their food and teaching them about agriculture is paramount in this rapidly changing world. MFBF is open to adapting its program to suit student’s unique needs and interests. “Ag in the Classroom” looks forward to collaborating with institutions to empower the next generation with agricultural knowledge and inspire future leaders.
