The Mississippi Department of Education, Office of Student Assessment and Office of Secondary Education, is releasing the revised blueprint for the Mississippi Academic Assessment Program End-of-Course (MAAP-EOC) test for U.S. History.
Beginning with the fall assessment of 2020, the U.S. History reporting categories will be organized by historical eras rather than content strands. The use of eras, rather than strands, will allow teachers, parents, and students to more accurately pinpoint deficit areas increasing the opportunity for student successes after directed remediation. Ranges, objectives, and approximate weights mirror the previous blueprint. This blueprint correlates to the performance objectives found in the Mississippi College- and Career-Readiness Standards for the Social Studies.
This update comes after feedback from students, parents, teachers, and district personnel indicated that the former blueprint, organized by strands (Civics, Civil Rights, Economics, Geography, History) presented challenges when identifying each student’s specific remediation needs. Additionally, research indicates that this historical era model is prevalent among other states.
The revised blueprint is found in the following location:

The U.S. History test will utilize an embedded field-test design and will consist of Multiple Choice (MC) items and Technology-Enhanced (TE) items which are described below.
Item Type | Points | Description |
Multiple Choice (MC) | 1 | Each has four response options, only one of which is correct; used to assess a variety of skill and content levels; each of these items is worth one point. |
Technology-Enhanced
(TE) |
1
Or 2 |
Each is designed to elicit evidence of a broad range of student understanding; student interacts with enhanced features of these computer-delivered, auto-scorable test items to show understanding of skills and concepts; includes the drag-and-drop, hot-spot, data displays, matching interactions, drop-down menus, and multiple answer MC; these items are scored on a 0-1 or 0-2-point scale using item-specific scoring rules. |
The MDE will release more information about the U.S. History test during the 2020-2021 school year. Sample items, along with an online-training tool (OTT), for student use will be available the week of October 19, 2020.
