Phonics First literacy courses are available virtually through at least December of the 2020–2021 school year. The MDE Office of Special Education is offering both Phonics First® K-5 and Phonics First® 6-12 courses in an E-learning format at no cost to districts. Phonics First K-5 is intended for General education K-3 teachers and special education K-5 teachers. Phonics First 6-12 educators who provide reading instruction, such as special education teachers, interventionists, and literacy coaches. Teachers receive training comparable to face-to-face courses, including interactive assignments, group forum discussion, and instructor feedback to video assignment submissions. Both training and classroom materials are included with registration.
Teachers will have 30 days to complete 30 hours of instruction and may obtain CEUs for the course. If you feel your staff would benefit from this intensive literacy training, please forward this information to teachers, interventionists, literacy coaches and others who provide direct instruction in reading to children.
