The Mississippi Department of Education provides ongoing professional development to teachers to share best practices for improving student achievement. The department recently provided a specialized training for math teachers in K-8 schools with the lowest scores on state math tests. At the training, teachers learned activities that stimulate student curiosity, conceptual understanding and cooperative learning.
The training included a supply of math manipulatives that were selected based on a handful of math content standards that may be considered challenging.
One of the schools featured in this Mississippi School Spotlight video, Clausell Elementary School in the Jackson Public School District, effectively used professional development as part of its school improvement strategy to move its accountability grade from an F (2013 and 2014) to a D (2015) to a C (2016).
