The Mississippi Department of Education is pleased to share two new documents for district use: Supports for Parents of English Learners and the EL Progress Checklist.
Supports for Parents of English Learners is designed with parents of English learners in mind and answers questions about what the English learner designation means. It may be given to parents upon determination of EL qualification. It is written in a question and answer format and addresses the most common questions posed by parents of English learners and provides parents with important information about their rights and the rights of their children under the English learner designation. Parents are also provided with general information about questions to ask and who to contact for specific school related issues.
The EL Progress Checklist (https://www.mdek12.org/EL) is meant to serve as a guide for planning language acquisition goals for English learner students for whom partial or no English Learner Proficiency Test data is available. It is a tool that can be used to determine language levels for individual students and may be used for multiple purposes including setting goals for language service plans.
Both documents can be found on the Mississippi Department of Education’s English Learner Supports page (https://www.mdek12.org/EL).
Questions regarding these documents may be addressed to Sandra Elliott (selliott@mdek12.org).
