The Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) approved “Chess” as a sport activity at its’ recent February meeting. Beginning with the 2019-20 school year, MHSAA’s two-hundred-fifty high schools and three-hundred-three middle schools and junior highs will have the opportunity to form chess teams for students to participate on the interscholastic level, learn the game and compete with one another.

MHSAA has begun the process of formulating rules and guideline associated with the implementation of chess as a school sport activity. MHSAA Executive Director Don Hinton states “We are extremely excited to add chess to our education-based list of sports activities. The feedback we have received thus far from our schools has been very positive. We are off to a great start integrating chess programs into our schools and introducing the game to our students who choose to participate.”
