The Institute for Competition Sciences is announcing three math competitions that offer students engaging opportunities to apply their mathematical knowledge, tackle real-world challenges, and earn scholarship money. Whether using data science to manage risk, solving complex word problems, or competing in a scenario-based case challenge, these competitions provide a platform for students to grow mathematically while competing for significant awards.
Here’s a look at the upcoming competitions:
- Modeling the Future Challenge – Real-World Actuarial Math Modeling Scholarship Competition for High School Students! (mtfchallenge.org): Students will use data science, mathematical modeling, and risk analysis to create projects aimed at solving real-world risks. Registration is open until Nov. 10, with a prize purse of $84,000 in awards and scholarships for finalists and top prize winners.
- Hardest Math Problem – Math competition for middle school students Grades 5-8 (hardestmathproblem.org): This competition pushes students to solve word problems grounded in real-world scenarios, with prizes going to top performers in each grade. Registration ends Dec. 8, with contributions to 529 savings plans for winning students.
- Desafiando el Riesgo – A Latino Math Case Competition (dr.competitionsciences.org) (High School Latino Students): Latino and Hispanic students will analyze data and propose solutions to risk-based scenarios for a chance to earn up to $3,000 in scholarships. Registration opens Dec. 2 and closes Jan. 26.
