Mississippi Council on Economic Education will host a What is Socialism? workshop for 6th-12th grade teachers from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27 at Millsaps College. Registration deadline is noon Jan. 26.
Description: This new curriculum unit examines the major themes and issues with socialism, as well as covers the ideas of what socialism is, how it’s understood today, and how it was applied in the past. Data, analysis, and activities will highlight the history of socialist thought and application over time. As a classroom topic, comparative economic systems provide an excellent lens for students to see key economic concepts in action.
Participants will leave this session with lessons, activities and background information that include:
- a) Socialism – What Is It? – an activity comparing student responses with results of a poll of the general public and introducing the definition of socialism
- b) Socialism Defined – looking at the problems of control and incentives
- c) Missing Information and Missing Prices – an activity on the problems of central control with limited information
- d) Failures of Socialism – the knowledge problem and the pathologies of privilege.
