The Mississippi Department of Education’s Office of Elementary Education and Reading, Division of Literacy, is announcing an opportunity for district administrators, principals, lead teachers, and instructional coaches (1-5) to attend a one-day, in-person professional development training titled Science of Reading in the Classroom: HQIM Small Group Instruction Implementation (grades 1-5). This professional development will explore the relationship between High-Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM), the importance of utilizing small group instructional materials effectively, and the integration of word recognition and language comprehension skills during small group instruction.
Part 1 Focus: (morning) Whole Group Professional Learning
- Making Shifts in Practice to Support Students
- Rethinking Reading Comprehension
- Understanding the ABCs of Small Group Instruction
- Using Small Group Instruction Effectively
- Implementing Small Groups Tied to HQIM
- Implementing Effective Teacher-led Small Groups
- Exploring the “Plus Block: Addressing Intensive Reading Intervention
Part 2 Focus: (afternoon) Curriculum Specific Workshop Breakout Sessions
*Participants need to bring a teacher’s edition and accompanying small group materials needed to plan.

- Review Tier I HQIM specific small group instructional materials
- Understand how to best structure the daily and weekly reading block schedule for HQIM implementation of whole group and small group instruction
- Discuss how to assess and group students
- Determine what routines and best practices should or could be at the teacher table
- Overview additional supports within specific HQIMs for other subgroups of students
- Explore the available administrative resources provided in the curriculum
