New teachers can apply for Winter-Reed Teacher Loan Repayment program; Deadline is Sept. 15

The Mississippi Office of Student Financial Aid is accepting applications for the Winter-Reed Teacher Loan Repayment Program for the 2023-2024 academic year.  Applications will be accepted through Sept. 15.

The program is designed to help early career teachers repay their undergraduate student loans. With federal student loans entering repayment this fall for the first time in three years, now is the time to apply.  First-year teachers holding a valid standard five-year Mississippi educator’s license are eligible to apply as new recipients. Second-year and third-year teachers are eligible to apply as renewal recipients. Eligible recipients must work full-time as a teacher or librarian in a Mississippi public school district.

Only 150 first-year teachers will be awarded each year on a first-come, first-served basis of all eligible applicants who apply by the deadline date.  However, priority will be given to teachers in geographical shortage areas.  Loan repayment for teachers in critical shortage areas begins at $4,000/year, and loan repayment for all other districts begins at $1,500/year.

The online application, along with program requirements, can be found at www.msfinancialaid.org/wrtr.  Applications will be accepted through Sept. 15, and supporting documents will be accepted through Oct. 15.
