One-day training offered for Science of Reading in the Classroom: HQIM Assessment and Writing Implementation

The Mississippi Department of Education’s Office of Elementary Education and Reading, Division of Literacy, is excited to announce an opportunity for district administrators, principals, lead teachers, and instructional coaches (K-5) to attend a one-day, in-personprofessional development training titled Science of Reading in the Classroom: HQIM Assessment and Writing ImplementationThis professional development will explore the relationship between High-Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM), the importance of utilizing assessments effectively, and the integration of reading and writing during instruction.

Part 1 Focus: (morning) Whole Group Professional Learning

  • Literacy Assessment Research
  • Compare different assessments (formative vs. summative, benchmark vs. state assessments)
  • Importance of Assessment in HQIM
  • The integration of Reading and Writing – The Writing Rope

Part 2 Focus: (afternoon) Curriculum Specific Workshop Breakout Sessions

*Participants need to bring a teacher’s edition and accompanying materials needed to plan.

  • Assessment System (Timelines, Types, Materials,)

  • Knowledge Building
