As the Board begins work updating the NAEP Science Assessment Framework for assessments that will be administered in 2028 and beyond, it is seeking nominations for NAEP Science Assessment Framework panelists. These panelists will help shape how the country’s largest ongoing assessment of student achievement reflects what students know and can do in a critically important subject.
Panel members will discuss and analyze a variety of aspects related to the framework, including content areas and objectives for grades 4, 8, and 12, practices, assessment items, contextual variables and reporting, and achievement level descriptions for NAEP Basic, NAEP Proficient, and NAEP Advanced.
The Board seeks a variety of stakeholders with a keen interest in science education and testing to serve on:
- A Steering Panel that provides high-level guidance and recommendations to members of the Development Panel about potential revisions, along with assistance in outreach. We need teachers, policymakers, business representatives, parents, state and local school administrators, curriculum specialists, content experts, assessment specialists, researchers and technical experts, users of assessment data, and other members of the public.
- A Development Panel, where a subset of panelists from the Steering Panel will develop a framework outline that summarizes key elements of recommended updates and associated rationale.
Panel members’ discussions and eventual recommendations will focus on what should be assessed – not what or how content should be taught – and will consider a variety of viewpoints, pertinent issues, and research. The frequency and duration of meetings for both panels, which will begin to convene in September 2022, will be adapted to best respond to the work at hand.
