MDWFP’s Museum of Natural Science plans Spring Break Teacher Workshops

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks Museum of Natural Science has several Spring Break workshops for teacher from March 14-18.

WORKSHOP TITLE: Get Your Game On

Monday, March 14
9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

CEU VALUE: .6 CEUs from Mississippi College

COST: $25 non-refundable pre-registration fee

DESCRIPTION:  Gaming has become a large part of student life outside the classroom. This workshop will help you take that enthusiasm and bring it to the classroom with the help of our temporary exhibit, Game Changers.  We will explore different ways to introduce and use gaming to engage students in activities which will increase student participation while increasing academic performance.

OF NOTE: Please bring your lunch and a reusable water bottle. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for the weather as we will be outside for some activities.

WORKSHOP TITLE:  Aquatic WILD

Tuesday, March 15
9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

COST: $25 non-refundable pre-registration fee

DESCRIPTION:  Aquatic WILD is a K-12 curriculum that emphasizes aquatic wildlife and aquatic ecosystems. It is designed to be an instructional resource for educators who want to introduce students to hands-on activities that are intended for both classroom and non-formal settings. Aquatic WILD has a new STEM component that allows educators to dive deeper into science, technology, engineering and mathematics content while developing an awareness for conservation efforts.

WORKSHOP TITLE: The Beez Needz: Pollinators in the Classroom

Wednesday, March 16
9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

DESCRIPTION:  The Beez Needz: Pollinators in the Classroom provides educators with the information and materials they need to teach engaging, standards-based lessons and activities on the topic of pollination. This workshop aims to help teachers convey the ecological importance of pollinators and how they are connected to our food and environment. The Beez Needz: Pollinators in the Classroom occurs on Pollinator Day at the museum, an event which will be incorporated into the workshop and provide registrants with even more activities guaranteed to generate a buzz amongst your students.

WORKSHOP TITLE: Flying WILD: Born to Fly

Thursday, March 17
9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

CEU VALUE: .6 CEUs from Mississippi College

COST: $25 non-refundable pre-registration fee

DESCRIPTION:  Using Flying WILD curriculum, this workshop will target early childhood educators and introduce engaging interdisciplinary, standards-based activities that highlight the unique lives of birds. Throughout the workshop, educators will be introduced to hands-on resources and activities such as owl pellet dissection and nest building, aimed at helping students develop an understanding of birds’ unique physical characteristics and the role birds play in their ecosystems. This workshop is ideal for PreK-3rd grade educators and will have a strong emphasis on collaborative, project-based learning activities.

WORKSHOP TITLE: WOW! Wonders of Wetlands: Aquatic Animals

Friday, March 18
9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

CEU VALUE: .6 CEUs from Mississippi College

COST: $25 non-refundable pre-registration fee

DESCRIPTION: WOW! The Wonders of Wetlands is an instructional guide for educators that provides a resourceful and creative collection of wetland activities, information, and ideas. The workshop will introduce you to the three parameters of wetlands (vegetation, soils, hydrology), wetlanplad functions and values as well as management options all through fun and engaging activities. WOW! incorporates wetlands into reading, math, social studies, art or physical education lessons. We will explore adaptations wetland animals use.

OF NOTE:  Please bring your lunch and a reusable water bottle. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for the weather as we will be on the museum’s trails and in canoes for a few activities. Muck boots may be useful but are not required.
