- Compassion Fatigue and Teacher Resilience – The COVID-19 pandemic has required teachers to help children and families cope with the crisis. Teachers, particularly those who fail to engage in self-care or lack resilience training, are at increased risk of burnout or compassion fatigue. To mitigate this risk, this report provides examples of strategies districts can use to strengthen resilience among emotionally-burdened teachers.
- Establishing Partnerships to Support Student Wellness – This brief outlines how districts and community organizations can partner to implement systems and programs that support students’ health, wellness, and social-emotional development.
Promote Students’ Recovery
- The Role of Resiliency in Student Learning Recovery – Supporting students’ resiliency will be key to academic and social-emotional recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. This research brief and discussion guide reviews the available secondary research on factors that promote resiliency and strategies schools can use to support students.
- Best Practices for Instructional and SEL Recovery – This report examines best practices for addressing academic and social-emotional recovery and includes strategies and innovative ideas from notable districts. The content will assist districts with planning, as well as communicating with families and other groups.
- Best Practices for Modeling Self-Management and Positive Behavior – This research brief aims to support teachers with classroom and behavioral management strategies not only for in-person instruction, but also for the virtual learning environment. The brief synthesizes the secondary literature on best practices for modeling positive behaviors, teaching student self-monitoring, and promoting a supportive classroom environment and positive student behaviors remotely.

- Superintendents Leadership Council – The superintendents group reconvened last week on October 14th to discuss how unfinished academic and social-emotional learning from the past two school years is impacting their districts in 2021-2022. - A Systematic Approach to Social-Emotional Learning and Well-Being – On Thursday, October 28th at 2pm ET, Hanover will be hosting a roundtable discussion with Dr. Rose Prejean-Harris (Director of SEL, Atlanta Public Schools (GA)), Dr. Kathleen Chronister (Director of SEL, Davis School District (UT)), Dr. Shelley Berman (AASA Lead Superintendent for SEL), and Dr. Marriam Ewaida (Managing Director, Hanover Research).
As districts consider how to leverage ESSER funding to improve SEL supports within schools, the panel will discuss how to take a system-level approach to the social-emotional well-being of students and staff, the challenges and opportunities of building such a system, and ways to reinforce SEL at the school and classroom levels.
