MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) – Educators throughout the state are attempting to reach beyond the classroom walls. The Mississippi Department of Education wants to get parents involved in their children’s education. They came up with the Family Guide for Student Success.
Meridian superintendent, Dr. Amy Carter, and Cheryl Thomas, with the Lauderdale County School District, are supporting the initiative. They say the guide is designed to help the students and parents understand the lessons together.
“It’s one thing to give them [parents} a verbal or a handout of something but this gives them what the expectations are at school in parent- friendly terms, then an example of an activity and how to reinforce that,” said Thomas.
The guide outlines math and English from Pre-K through 8th grade. It has many activities and illustrations showing how to use everyday items at home to help solve problems.
Rebecca Woodard has children in elementary, middle, and high school.
“If you don’t understand what your kids are learning, you can’t help them,” said Woodard.
