Mathematics Specialist Conference

Do you work directly with other teachers to improve mathematics teaching and learning? If so, then this conference is for you! Instructional coaches, curriculum coordinators, lead mathematics teachers, administrators, and others who work directly with other teachers need the opportunity to collaborate with other professionals serving these roles for their districts. The CMSE began hosting this conference in 2011 in order to meet the needs of those individuals who are working to impact instructional changes among teachers in their schools.

The Mathematics Specialist Conference is an annual conference presented by The Center for Mathematics and Science Education. The conference was developed to help Mathematics Specialists, Mathematics Coaches, Lead Mathematics Teachers, or other professionals working directly with teachers better serve their school and district.

The Keynote Speaker for the 2017 conference will be Dr. Maggie McGatha from the University of Louisville. Dr. Maggie B. McGatha is a professor of mathematics education in the Department of Middle and Secondary Education at the University of Louisville. Her research interests include the professional development of teachers of mathematics particularly focusing on mathematics coaching. She is currently the PI on “Developing Residential Expertise for Achieving Mathematics for All” (DREAM for All) that supports elementary teachers in earning an elementary mathematics specialist endorsement and studies the impact of these professionals on student achievement. She is an author of numerous articles, co-editor of Elementary Mathematics Specialists: Developing, Refining, and Examining Programs that Support Mathematics Teaching and Learning (AMTE/IAP, 2017), co-author of Mathematics Coaching: Resources and Tools for Coaches and Leaders, K-12 (Pearson, 2014) and On the Money: Math Activities to Build Financial Literacy, Grades 6-8 (NCTM, 2015). Maggie works with coaches, teacher leaders, and administrators as a Training Associate for Cognitive Coaching℠ and an Agency Trainer for Adaptive Schools. She received her doctorate from Vanderbilt University (Tennessee), her master’s degree from Austin Peay State University (Tennessee) and her bachelor’s degree from Morehead State University (Kentucky).

GRADES: K-12 DATE: November 3 TIME: 9:00AM – 4:00PM, lunch will be provided LOCATION: Jackson Avenue Center, Oxford, Mississippi REGISTRATION: $175.00 (includes lunch and 0.6 CEUs)

Knuckle Down on the New Standards: MS College – and Career – Readiness Standards for Science Grades K-2

Join other primary teachers from across the state as we work together to explore the core elements of Mississippi’s new science standards. Learn how to apply the engineering design process in the primary classroom with challenges such as making shadows and keeping ice solid, creating the best ramp and collecting water, and building a tower and stopping erosion. Participants will come away with an understanding of how science skills developed in the primary grades are integral in students’ future success in science learning.

GRADES: K-2

DATES: Session 2: Discovering Patterns and Constructing Explanations – December 8, 2017

Session 3: Systems, Order, and Organization – April 13, 2018

TIME: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., includes 1 hour for lunch

LOCATION: Jackson Avenue Center, University of Mississippi, Oxford

REGISTRATION: $125.00 (includes 0.6 CEUs) per session

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: Session 2 deadline – December 1, 2017 Session 3 deadline – April 6, 2018

Knuckle Down on the New Standards: MS College- and Career-Readiness Standards for Science Grades 3-5

Join other elementary teachers from across the state as we work together to explore the core elements of Mississippi’s new science standards. Along with opportunities to explore the new standards, each session in this three-part series will focus on a different crosscutting concept or theme as outlined in the Grades 3-5 Overview. Discover how to make the engineering design process applicable with several challenges, including the use of magnets and other easy access materials, how to make the best solar oven, and the concept of interdependence of systems. Participants will come away with an understanding of how science skills develop across grade levels to provide a solid foundation of learning for students.

GRADES: 3-5

DATES: Session 2: Energy and Change – October 25, 2017

Session 3: Interdependence of Systems – February 7, 2018

TIME: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., includes 1 hour for lunch

LOCATION: Jackson Avenue Center, University of Mississippi, Oxford

REGISTRATION: $125.00 (includes 0.6 CEUs) per session

Knuckle Down on the New Standards: MS College- and Career-Readiness Standards for Science Grades 6-8

Join other middle school teachers from across the state of Mississippi as we use active learning to get a grip on ways to incorporate all of the core elements of the state’s new science standards. Along with opportunities to explore the new standards, each session in this three-part series will focus on the different themes as outlined in the Grades 6-8 Overview. Network with others as we apply the concepts of structure and function, systems and cycles, and cause and effect. Participants will come away with an understanding of how to build science reasoning from students’ previous learning experiences and tie together concepts learned across the middle school grades.
