The MDE, through the Office of School Improvement, the Office of Compulsory Attendance, and the Office of Elementary Education and Reading, will offer regional professional learning opportunities on Using Data and Interventions to Address Root Causes of Chronic Absenteeism and Behavior Challenges. Research confirms how important attendance and behavior are to overall school climate and academic achievement. Recently, Mississippi began focusing on tracking chronic absenteeism and student referrals, as part of newly approved accountability plans under ESSA. This training will provide participants with insight into important data points that are critical to supporting students and will offer strategies to address chronic absenteeism and student discipline.
Building on the groundbreaking research about the importance of early warning indicators by Robert Balfanz at Johns Hopkins University and others around the country, the facilitator will provide information and strategies to assist schools with how to get to the root causes of attendance and behavior issues; and how to work to implement and develop multi-tiered student supports and interventions that help students get back on track for graduation and future success.
The training is limited to a team of two (2) or three (3) educators per district. This event is being funded with state and/or federal funds and is being provided for employees of school districts, employees of the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) and MDE contractors.
